Medicine Buddha

སངས་རྒྱས་སྨན་ལྷ།

This large, finely painted tangka depicts Medicine Buddha seated in dhyanasana on a multi-colored lotus throne. His left hand lies in his lap in dhyana mudra and balances a begging bowl, while his right hand rests against his leg with the palm facing out and holds the stem of a foliate branch between his thumb and index finger in place of the haritaki or myrobalan. He wears a red patchwork sanghati embellished with gold foliate motifs, which is draped over his left shoulder and leaves his right shoulder bare. He is otherwise unadorned except for a gold bud-shaped finial that is placed on top of the domed-shaped ushnisa atop his head. Encircling him are a green aureole and red nimbus, and a parasol festooned with streamers shelters his head from above. Framed.
