Marpa was an 11th century translator who journeyed to India three times, returning with the teachings that he transmitted to Milarepa and other students. This transmission lineage went on to be referred to as Kagyupa or “the ear whispered teaching lineage.” He wears white and brown robes and he sits with hands resting on his folded legs. Sakyamuni, attendant deities, and a dakini reside in clouds at the top of the painting. Three lama portraits and Milarepa are placed about the central figure. Several protective deities are in the bottom portion of the painting.
